When we got discharged from the hospital last week we made a neurosurgery follow up for the 9th. We knew that we would be watching his head growth to make sure the fluid was not building to much. We knew that there was a 98% chance he would need a shunt. We just didn't think it would be so soon.
We are in the hospital...again.
The past few days we noticed B's head get fuller, with fluid. He started throwing up more, a sign of the pressure and we think he was having small seizures, also a sign. We got a hold of neurosurgery yesterday and they wanted us to come in right away. They did a quick MRI and assessment. They determined that he needed to have the pressure relieved. They had him prepped for surgery within 2 hours. They put his drain (EVD) back in to drain fluid as needed. They want to watch him and make sure there is no sign of the old bacteria left and then they will put a shunt in as a permanent solution. They will evaluate him on Monday and check all the cultures then hopefully operate again.
This time surgery was a much better experience for everyone. B got extubated (breathing tube out) right after surgery and he didn't need to go to ICU. He is getting Tylenol for pain and is doing really well! He is back on normal feeding schedule and with less pressure in his head, he's much happier.
So yes it sucks, back in the hospital. But we knew it was coming...hopefully this is the final stretch of our hospital days.
