Product overload!

My last post was about getting the chemicals out of the house and let me tell you I started this with the good intentions to get my family healthy and I am so overwhelmed.

I thought if I'm going to change one thing might as well check on all the products we use. It has been like a domino effect.

I did research on brands and hit the mall this weekend. L'Occtain, Aveda, Origins...all these products I read claim to be natural. Upon visiting the stores and reading labels I learned they are not! I finally decided to try Whole Foods and they are a huge selection of wonderful products. The sales lady working that day, she was a life saver. Lotion, hand soap, hand lotion, natural deodorant, hair gel, shave cream...check check check!!

Next I am going to find D a bath soap he will like. I have been using Dr Bronners soap for a few years and I love it. It's all natural and the best stuff ever! I have 4 scents that I alternate between. D doesn't care for it but I'll keep trying.

It's crazy all the products I own that have chemicals. This is where the overwhelming part come in. Shampoo, conditioner, hair spray, hair gel, shine spray, sunscreen, shaving cream....and worst of all my makeup!!!! Once I started checking all my stuff it was like 'oh my god it's in everything'!!! No wonder cancer rate so high!

I really want to do this 100% so I am willing to find a new makeup line I like. I have heard rave reviews about Bare Minerals. Anyone use there products?

Some of you asked what I use now.

I use Kiehl's natural line for face wash, face lotion. (I buy it at Nordstrom) I found Alba lotion, shave cream, hair styling cream, sugar scrub I love, why haven't I been using this shave cream all my life? The deodorant is from Life Stinks, so far I like it. It's a powder, weird I know, but it's working well. I worked out this morning and no smell! Kiss my Face hand soap.

B used Johnson's Naturals as a baby and then I switched to Aveeno so I'm going back to the Naturals and I got him some Baby Bee soap and lotion. I used it on him last night and today he has a small rash. Looks like eczema or hives? So we'll see if his skin just doesn't like the Baby Bee line.

I am really committed to changing over our products, without wasting what I have and spending a fortune of course. Actually some of the stuff I found so far is cheap than what I was buying. It's kind of like when I found out I had Celiac and had to change most of all my foods. It was overwhelming at first and now it's just normal for me. I eat foods without gluten, I'm used to it. This will become easy too. Slowly and surely the change is good!!! Does this mean I'm Green now??

I've been using Bare Minerals for over 10 years and I love it! It is pricier but many of the colors will last you forever. I have bought a lot of kits on QVC b/c you get the most bang for your buck. Lots of colors and brushes for fraction of cost. They also have boutiques and sell at Ulta and Sephora and they will do your make up to figure out your shade.

Thanks for all your updates- sounds like you are well on your way to a "natural" household!

I've been reading your blog for a long time- before B came along- and I never comment.... just a creeper-ha

Anywho- I use pur minerals as my makeup and I love it. My mom uses Bare Minerals and loves that for her. I find pur has a heavier coverage than Bare- If you have an ULTA close to you- they carry both brands and you can compare.

Good luck!

I have very sensitive skin due to lupus and I love bare essentials. Will you share more of what you found in Aveda products or what to look for. I have splurged on some items and won't if there is crap in them.

Also, watch anything byjohnson's i've read that there some bad stuff in all of it. Maybe try California baby.

we are in the process of doing the same thing. I started with Olivia's stuff and use california baby or burts bees. However, I wanted to let you know she has a rash from the baby bees calming lotion. It took us a bit to figure out what was causing the rash since we also recently introduced solids but after laying off the BB lotion my husband used it on her again last night and the rash is back. So california baby only for us! Also I too had heard that all J&J products had harmful chemicals in them but I could be wrong. I switched my own shampoo and body wash to stuff at Whole foods but need to work on my makeup etc. Keep us posted on the good stuff you end up liking!

I am in the middle of doing this very same thing!!! Bare Minerals is ahhhh-mazing, I have been using it for 9+ years and won't use anything else! The coverage is great it really blends away any imperfections and looks extremely natural. I have very fair skin w/ hyperpigmentation and broken capillaries and people tell me often that I have "beautiful skin" when really I have "beautiful make-up" : ) We are trying california baby calendula cream for my little guys eczema right now and I wanted to love it, but his rash is the same if not slightly worse : ( It smells wonderful, but thats not helping the skin issues..Go to ewg.org they list TONS of cosmetics/baby products etc...with a rating of 1-10 for toxicity etc.. as well as ingredient lists and more, super helpful I think. GOOD LUCK : )

I use bare minerals and love it! It is pretty pricey but it lasts forever! I am Not sure if this is correct but i have heard the Johnson's Natural isnt really 'natural' and has the bAd chemicals in it. I may be wrong. California baby and burts bees are great for kiddos and safe, just pricey.

I can recommend "Method" for any cleaning products and esp. dishwasher tabs and laundry liquid for HE washers.

I also use pur as my make-up, due to better coverage. Haven't really looked into shampoo, lotions etc. so this is the most interesting part of your resolution..keep posting I love your blog!

Oh and I am another one of those "silent creeps" so far :)

Oh, Heather, I totally relate-- we've been undergoing the switch here too gradually over the last couple of years. I know a lot of people rave about bare minerals, but my absolute favorite makeup brand is Tarte-- I especially love their mascara! You can find them on Sephora's site or their company's web page. :)

Good luck with everything!!! :)

I have been using Bare Minerals for approx. six years and love it. As all things, it has its downsides. When my skin is clear, it works great, but sometimes I need a little more coverage. It also seems to take a while to put on, but then again, I am impatient in the morning. I look forward to seeing what you end up using.

I have heard awesome things about Kiehl's line. I will have to try it now. I use Bare Minerals and just love all of it. I fall asleep without washing my face a lot these days and I don't feel bad about it!

What about dying your hair? Is there a natural alternative?

Great post, I've been thinking of cleaning out all of our products around the house too and this definitely helps motivate me!

Good for you for taking this leap! I have used Bare for 7 years and will never use anything else for my foundation. They just released some killer pressed powder eyeshadows which is great because loose powder eyeshadoes (while pretty) are MESSY! That is the biggest complaint I have heard about mineral make up in general -- it is messy. I don't have this issue but I also don't use a ton and I guess I'm not crazy? LOL! I wear very light make up and I do admit if I have really bad breakout or under eye bags I use a concealer. Like a previous comment said, QVC has some great prices! I don't have Ulta or a Sephora near me so I got in the habit of ordering from QVC years ago before Bare was sold in Macy's & Nordys. Anyway, good luck!

I'm glad you did a update with everything you use. I am trying to do a similar "cleanse" in our house.. But also not trying to break the bank with it either.. That can be tough!
